“Crowded Spaces” will showcase the work of artist Allison Long Hardy, adjunct professor in the Department of Art and Art History at UMW. The exhibit explores the ebb and flow of crowds; how crowds exist, move and dissipate as a cohesive unit; and how communication travels through crowds. Hardy’s works of pen, graphite, colored pencil and collage were inspired by her recent residency at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, VA. For more about the artist, visit allisonlonghardy.com.

The History of the University of Mary Washington, 1908-2008

Inquiring Minds presents photographs and artifacts from the first 100 years of the school now known as the University of Mary Washington. The exhibition is grouped into sections that trace campus life and student experiences through the last 100 years and seven name changes. Exhibition highlights include the groundbreaking shovel used for the first buildings on campus, student scrapbooks, and many other photographs and publications that help to document the institution’s history.

This annual exhibition is organized by the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board (“RACSB”) and hosted by the University of Mary Washington Galleries. Many of the artists featured are involved with the Kenmore Club, a community-based self-help program operated by RACSB.

Egg tempera: an enduring tradition
August 26 – October 11, 2002
The medium of egg tempera was used by the ancient Egyptians, perfected by the Byzantine icon painters, and flourished during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. This exhibition features egg tempera paintings by contemporary artists who have revitalized the medium by utilizing fresh subject matter and modern approaches.

Helen Mirkil: conversations
October 24 – December 13, 2002
A renewed interest in art history is a major component of Post-modern art. In this unique exhibition, a respected contemporary artist presents her on-going interactive responses to some of the acknowledged masterpieces from the history of western art.

Mary Washington College Galleries proudly presents a select group of paintings and drawings by Phyllis Ridderhof Martin in celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Ridderhof Martin Gallery. On display in the Lobby, will be works from the collection of local artist and collector, Jeremy Austin.

Nathan Haenlein: Supplanted
March 27 – June 1, 2003
Works by Studio Art Adjunct Professor, Nathan Haenlein. Currently a senior lecturer in art at Mary Washington College, Haenlein holds an M.A. and an MFA in printmaking from the School of Art and Art History at the University of Iowa, and a BFA from the University of Toledo. He has held many solo and group exhibitions in the United States and Europe, and his prints are in a number of private collections in the United States, Europe and Japan. Haenlein is a member of the College Art Association and the Southern Graphics Council. Last year he held the Leola Bergmann/Iowa Print Group Graduate Fellowship from The University of Iowa.
